Tumescent liposuction is the most common and popular form of liposuction. It is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the size of the target area, and takes between 1.5-2 hours. The tumescent technique uses several litres of a saline “wetting” solution, which is injected below the skin and into the fat. This decreases blood loss, facilitates anesthesia and creates space between the muscle and fatty tissue, allowing the cannula to move more freely. Fat cells are then permanently removed (suctioned out) through small incisions with the use of a microcannula attached to a high-power vacuum.
Vaser Liposuction is an invasive method performed under full anaesthetic using thin cannula and ultrasound.. On average, a procedure usually takes only 1 - 2 hours. Like traditional liposuction, the body is injected with a with a saline solution. Next, ultrasound waves are emitted externally to the fat cells, a prefered method by most surgeons because it limits problems such as killing the skin and internal burns. The ultrasound waves liquify the fat cells and after the targeted areas have been treated and liquified, the surgeon sucks the fat cells and the solution out of the body.
SlimLipo is a variation of laser assisted liposuction and traditional liposuction. SlimLipo has two different laser wavelengths passing through the same fiber-optic handpiece. It is popular when treating the chin, rear surfaces of the arms, abdomen and inner thighs. One of the wavelengths is tuned to fat tissue and the other to the dermis (undersurface of the skin), creating retraction. Essentially this creates more skin tightening. A specially designed handpiece allows surgeons work with more precision in small areas. and target different curves and contours of the body.
Approved as of 2010, CoolSculpting is a popular, non-surgical procedure which uses a handheld device to precisely freeze and destroy fat below the surface of the skin. Like all other methods of liposuction, CoolSculpting is not intended for significant or long-term weight loss, but is designed to treat stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Common targeted areas include the abs, love handles, back, arms, and underneath the chin.
